The Eating Disorders Association of Canada/Association des Troubles Alimentaire du Canada will host its 3rd Biennial conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia, October 11-12, 2012.

Recovery from an Eating Disorder requires much more than symptomatic relief. Beyond food restriction, the emotional and social lives of many who suffer from eating disorders become restricted in the broadest sense. Borrowing from Elizabeth Gilbert’s wildly popular book Eat Pray Love, the theme of the EDAC-ATAC 2012 Conference reflects the broad domains of intervention and growth necessary for recovery from an eating disorder. With the theme of Eat Play Live, clinicians and researchers will be exposed to innovative practical interventions that address nutritional, interpersonal and psychosocial recovery. Programming will also highlight the parallel professional need for clinician self-care and balance which is an essential ingredient to working effectively with this population. The needs of care-givers of those with eating disorders will also be a highlight of the conference.  Keynote presentations will be provided by Dr. Janet Treasure (South London & Maudsley National Health Service) with a focus on working collaboratively with caregivers and Dr. Gail McVey (Ontario Community Outreach Program for Eating Disorders) on reframing and balancing obesity prevention messaging.  Filmmaker Dena Ashbaugh will preview her new film No Numbers: Identity Beyond Measure and will discuss her own experience as an actress with a history of an eating disorder.  The conference theme will be brought to life for attendees with a sampling of maritime food (did we mention lobster!), music and hospitality to augment the educational objectives of the proceedings. The Gaelic expression, Ceud Mìle Fàilte means “A Hundred Thousand Welcomes” and we look forward to welcoming colleagues and friends from around the country and from around the world.

A call for abstracts will be circulated in the New Year.  We hope to capture the richness and diversity of our Canadian Eating Disorder community in both the submitted abstracts and at the conference.  Keep a lookout on this website for more details as they become available.
